STDs & Screening

STDs are Sexually Transmitted Diseases, also known more recently as STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections). STDs are transmitted through various forms of sexual contact, not just intercourse. Any exchange of fluids including blood, vaginal fluid, semen, or other body fluids can transmit STDs. They can also be spread by blood transfusions, sharing needles, or from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. They are caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites.

Types of Common STDs:

  • Bacteria – Chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhea
  • Viruses – HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) that causes AIDS, HSV (herpes simplex virus) that causes genital herpes, hepatitis B & C, HPV (human papilloma virus) that can cause anal and genital warts and even cancer
  • Parasites – Trichomonas, scabies, lice

Risk Factors:

  • Having unprotected sex
  • Multiple sexual partners
  • Being forced to have sexual activity or intercourse by rape or assault
  • Having a history of STDs or STDs transmitted from mother to child
  • Injecting drugs and sharing needles
  • Misuse of recreational drugs or alcohol which lowers inhibition for risky behavior

Diagnosis of and Screening for STDs if performed by taking urine, blood, and other body fluid samples (like saliva) from the patient. Screening is also recommended for pregnant women, and before having vaginal or anal intercourse with a new partner.

Treatment for bacterial STDs is with antibiotics, and they are usually easier to treat than STDs from viruses (antiviral drugs).
